Ice-Cream Tutorial
Paint Shop Pro 6
This Tutorial is a little more intricate than my previous tutorials, but not (I don't think!) difficult if you have good working knowledge of Paint Shop Pro. Most of the techniques used, I stumbled upon by accident so it is not an exact science! I've divided the tutorial up into 4 parts to make it more manageable. If you like, rather than building an ice-cream from scratch, you can download the individual tubes from my tubes section and put them together yourself. If you just want to put the bits together, go to page 3 - you will need to make the ice-cream sauce yourself, but that's pretty easy!
Cone Putting together & adding Sauce Finishing Touches
Circular selection which will become the ice-cream scoop 1. Create a new image with a transparent background. I usually work on a canvas 400x400 pixels, because I personally find that a nice size, but really it's up to you. Choose the Freehand Selection tool and draw a roughly circular selection in the centre of your canvas. This will be your ice-cream scoop so it doesn't have to look to perfect - it's more realistic when slightly "rough". Again, the size that you choose to make it is up to you. I usually make it about a third of the width of the page on the basis that things usually look better sized down than up.
Filled & textured beginnings of ice-cream scoop 2. Select a dark grey (e.g. R:133, G:133, B:133) as your background colour and a light grey (e.g. R:223, G:223, B:223) as your foreground colour. Select the Flood Fill & choose Linear Gradient. In the second tab option choose the Foreground-Background gradient & make the Angle 270. Flood fill your selection. Now go to Image/Effects/Texture... & use the following settings: Texture number 22, Size 190, Smoothness 19, Depth 2, Ambience 0, Shininess 0, Color R:233, G:233, B:233, Angle 260, Intensity 50, Elevation 30. Obviously, these are just guidelines, please feel free to experiment.
Almost finished ice- cream scoop 3. For this tutorial, I'll be making strawberry ice-cream, but the principle remains the same whatever flavour you choose. Keeping the selection, make a new layer. Choose a dark pink (e.g. R:240 G:130 B:160) background colour & a lighter pink (e.g. R:240 G:195 B:210) foreground colour. Flood Fill the selection as before. Now choose Overlay from the Layer Blend Mode menu in the layer palette.
Finished ice-cream scoop 4. For the final touch to your ice-cream scoop, create a new layer keeping the selection. Go to Image/Effects/Cutout... Don't check Fill interior with color. As it is a scoop of strawberry ice-cream, choose a dark pink (e.g. R:140 G:50 B:85) for the Shadow colour - if it was chocolate, you could choose a dark brown, mint a dark green. Make Opacity 60, Blur 60, Vertical -20 & Horizontal -30. Then you have your finished ice-cream scoop. I know it doesn't look like much yet, it needs it's cone which is the next part of the tutorial on page 2! I find is easiest to merge all the layers at this point and make it into a picture tube, this makes it easy to re-size and place your scoop when you come to put it all together. If you're unsure how to save as picture tubes, go to my Tube mini-Tutorial here.
