Gingerbread Men Tutorial
Paint Shop Pro 6

Before you start, you need to download a couple of things - my raisin tube and my gingerbread men selections. The selections can be unzipped into any folder you like - they don't have to be kept in a special folder like the tubes. I have created a folder within my Paint Shop Pro folder called Selections where I keep them all.

File/New 1. Create a New Image, 300x400 pixels with a white background.
New Layer 2. On the Layers Palette, choose New Layer. In the Layer Properties dialogue box that now appears, give the layer a sensible name - we're going to use this layer to hold our gingerbread man, so I'm going to call mine Gingerbread Man.
Bear Selection 3. Go to Selections/Load from Disk... and choose one of the selections that you have downloaded (two.sel and bear.sel are my favourites!)You should now have a "marching ants" outline of a gingerbread man on your canvas.
Bear Selection 4. Change your foreground colour to R:195 G:139 B:79 and Flood Fill your selection. Drop the selection (Selections/Select None or CTRL+D)
Selecting Eyes 5. Create a new layer and call it Raisin Eyes. Using my Little Raisin tube, place 2 little eyes on your gingerbread mans face. Now, using the Selection tool, draw a rectangular selection around the eyes. Selecting EyesClick anywhere within the selection & you'll see that the two eyes are now selected. Go to Selections/Modify/Contract and contract the selection by 1.
Selecting Eyes 6. Move to your Gingerbread Man layer. Delete the selection. If you hide the Raisin Eyes layer now, you should see that your gingerbread man has 2 holes in his head. Drop the selection.
7. Using the Magic Wand tool, select the gingerbread man. Go to Image/Effcts/Texture... and use the following settings: Texture number 44, Size (%) 25, Smoothness, Ambience, Shininess all 0, Depth 1, Color white, Angle 315, Intensity 50 and Elevation 30. Click OK. Don't drop the selection.
Bevel Type 8. Go to Image/Effects/Inner Bevel.... Use the following settings: Bevel the second one in the list as shown in the image, Width 8, Smoothness 40, Depth 20, Ambience 20 Shininess 0, Color click on the little sqaure and change the color to R:219 G:191 B:117, Angle 315, Intensity 40 and Elevation 40. Click OK. Drop the selection.
Image so far 9. If you "unhide" the Raisin Eyes layer, your gingerbread man should look a little like this. All we have to do now is decorate him (or her!)
Layer Palette 10. Create two new layers above the Raisin Eyes layer. Call the top-most one Icing and the one beneath it Icing Shadow
Line Tool Palette 11. Select the Line Tool. In the Tool Options - Draw dialogue box, choose Type Freehand, Style Stroked, Width 4. Ensure that only Antialias is checked. In the second tab of the palette, use the settings as shown in this image.
Decorated Bear 12. Ensure that you are on the layer named Icing. Choose a colour you like and decorate your gingerbread man with the line tool.
Magic Wand 13. When you have it to your liking, select all the bits of icing with the Magic Wand tool. To select more than one area, hold down the SHIFT key at the same time as selecting. You will see that a little + appears next to your cursor and anything you select with that is added as part of the selected group.
14. When all the icing is selected, go to Image/Effects/Inner Bevel... and select the Frame preset. Click OK. Move to the layer named Icing Shadow. Don't drop the selection, but go to Selections/Modify/Contract and contract the selection by one. Go to Image/Effect/Drop Shadow.... Make the Color black, Opacity 45, Blur 6, Vertical and Horizontal offsets both 1. Click OK. Drop the selection.
The finished Gingerbread Man! 15. Your gingerbread man is finished!
As with anything in Paint Shop Pro, there is more than one way to achieve an effect. I have found two other tutorials on Gingerbread men that you may be interested in:
