Cow Print Text Tutorial
This is a really simple little tutorial, but it creates a nice effect.
1. Create a new image, 400x200 pixels, with a transparent background. Click on the Text Tool.
2. From the menu under Name, choose a font that you like - preferably something round & chunky. For this tutorial, I used Good Dog Cool, a freeware font available from Fonthead. Set the Size to quite large - I used 48, but this will depend on the font. Under Text Effects, make the text white and bold. Most importantly, ensure that the Create as Vector option is selected. Type some text and position it on your canvas.

Vector Text Properties 3. Select the Vector Object Selection Tool Vector Object Selection. Right Click on the text from the menu that appears go to Convert Text to Curves/As Character Shapes. Right-click on the text again & choose Properties. Use the settings shown adjacent.
Font Dialogue Box 4. In the Layers Palette, right-click on the vector layer & choose Convert to Raster. Click on the Selection Tool and press CTRL+A to select the entire canvas. Click anywhere on the canvas & your text will be selected. Go to Selections/Save to Alpha Channel and press ok and ok again. Go to Selections/Modify/Contract and contract the selection by 1.
Airbrush Settings 5. In the Layers Dialogue Box drag your orignal raster layer, Layer 1 above the converted vector layer, Layer 2 Set your foregroud colour to a dark brown - I used #433A2B. Click on the Airbrush Tool. Use the settings shown adjacent.
Airbrush Settings 6. Paint little splodges of colour onto your text. It doesn't have to be exact, but try not to get too carried away. Add a little at first, then add more later if it needs more. When you have finished, press CTRL+D to drop the selection.
7. Go to Layer/Merge/Merge Visibible. Now we just need to add a little bit of an inner bevel & drop Shadow to give it some depth, so we'll need our original selection. Go to Selections/Load from Alpha Channel. Your selection should be higlighted, click on ok.
Bevel Setting 8. Go to Image/Effects/Inner Bevel and select the Frame preset, but change the Bevel to the second one in the list.
8. In the Layers Palette, create a new layer beneath your merged layer. Go to Selections/Modify/Contract and contract the selection by 1. Go to Image/Effects/Drop Shadow - make Color black, Opacity 100, Blur 10, Horizontal and Vertical both 3.
Finished Text Your cow print text is now finished! You can use this technique for a variety of animal print texts, to see some examples, go here.
